Abstract

Fruits and flower edible petals rich in polyphenolic compounds, in particular anthocyanins are known for their pharmacological properties. In order to recover high amounts of such biomolecules from their matrix, various extraction conditions should be conducted. In the present paper, flower petals of Hibiscus sabdariffa and fruits of Ribes nigrum were irradiated with UV-C light for different times (10 and 20 minutes) and at different distances (20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 cm) with the objective to study its effect on plant bioactives level. Further, extraction of anthocyanins was performed in 70% ethanol solution. Control sample (non-irradiated) was analyzed similarly. The results showed that all extracts prepared from UV-C pre-treated samples contain higher anthocyanins content compared to control samples. Regarding the investigation on Hibiscus sabdariffa petals, a positive linear relation was found between the irradiation distance and anthocyanins content, at both 10 and 20 minutes of irradiation. Regarding Ribes nigrum berries, the highest anthocyanins content was found in samples irradiated at 40 and 50 cm distance, for 10 and 20 minutes. Application of UV-C radiation may become a useful tool not only for the improvement of microbiological inactivation but also for the enhancement of extraction of valuable compounds.
