THE ELASTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROCK MASSIF IN THE OPEN PIT WALL: ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMICS OF CHANGES
Abstract
One of the main tasks of open pit mining, besides maintaining the planned productivity, is to ensure the safety of production and personnel, and to keep the stability of the elements of open pit geotechnology. The open-pit mining operations form a large open-pit excavation for dozens of years, which results in a gradual change in the properties and state of the adjacent rock mass and in a decrease in its strength and elastic characteristics. This circumstance makes periodic monitoring of the geomechanical state of the rock mass close to an open pit obligatory by means of various methods. The paper presents the results of determining the geomechanical state of the rock mass in the vicinity of a large open pit excavation using the seismic method. On the basis of in-situ determinations of elastic wave velocities in the rock mass, its elastic characteristics (Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio) are monitored, on the basis of which we can conclude about the stability of the monitored area. The studies have shown that the seismic method (in the version of seismic tomography or seismic profiling) can provide sufficiently reliable data on the dynamics of changes in the geomechanical state of the adjacent rock mass over a fairly large area and thereby it is possible to monitor the geomechanical situation and stability of the pit wall sections. On the example of the Zhelezny open pit, JSC Kovdorsky GOK, the authors have shown the long-term experience of applying the seismic method for solving the problems of slope stability. The article presents various options for presenting the obtained results of controlling the stability of the elements of open pit geotechnology. The approach outlined is applicable to the mining industry enterprises developing mineral deposits with the formation of deep open pit excavations.
