OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRIFICATION IN LATVIA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL

Abstract

The present research analyses development opportunities for car electrification in Latvia in the context of the European Green Deal, assessing both political and economic aspects as well as business practices. The research aims to identify factors that influence the development of electromobility and to develop proposals for its promotion. The research employed document analysis, statistical, qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as conducted a case study of the company Ayvens Latvija and five expert interviews. The results show that the electrification of cars in Latvia could ensure a 10-15% increase in the share of electric cars by 2027, yet progress depends on state support mechanisms and infrastructure development. The growth of the electric car market, especially in corporate fleets, points to the important role of the private sector in promoting sustainable mobility. Electric cars are essential for reducing GHG emissions, but Latvia's development pace lags behind other European countries, pointing to the need to improve existing infrastructure and increase the use of renewable energy resources. The research concludes with proposals developed by the authors to promote the development of electromobility in Latvia, emphasizing the need for coordinated action between state institutions, local governments, and the business community. The recommendations cover strengthening education and public awareness, developing charging infrastructure in the regions, introducing financial support mechanisms for businesses, and promoting innovative solutions, including the development of battery recycling. Particular emphasis is placed on promoting private sector involvement and the importance of public sector leadership to ensure a smooth transition to a sustainable transport system. The proposals have been developed for public authorities and businesses, including financial incentives, expansion of the charging network, and public awareness measures.
