QUALITY PARAMETERS OF UKRAINIAN IRON ORE DEPOSITS AND THEIR COMPLIANCE WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESSES
Abstract
The resource base of Ukraine has 60 deposits of iron ore with proven reserves. The quality assessment of these objects was carried out during their exploration several decades ago. Commodity products of domestic mining enterprises are various types of iron ore, concentrate, pellets, agglomerate. Mostly commodity concentrates have a total iron content of 64-65%. The best indicators (more than 67% of Fe total) are characteristic of certain types of concentrates of Central and Ingulets enterprises. The quality of commodity products depends on the quality of iron ore, technological schemes that are implemented at the plants, but the main factor is the requirements for product quality from major consumers. Modern technological processes that determine requirements for the quality of trade iron ore and iron concentrates are the production of pig iron, direct reduction iron, hot briquetted iron, and granulated pig iron. For modern technologies of direct reduction of iron, the ore?s quality with Fe content of at least 65-68% is required. The mineral resource base of Ukraine has a sufficient iron ore reserves quantity, but needs to be revalued for the ore?s quality improvement in order to make the mining companies competitive. The main ways to improve the quality of iron ores are: 1) a cut-off parameters? review mainly cut-off grade Fe associated with magnetite; 2) use improved enrichment technology, including a flotation process; 3) exploration and involvement in mining magnetite quartzites within deep horizons wit underground mine. It is defined that the fastest and most inexpensive way to improve quality of iron ore and iron concentrates is cut-off parameters? revaluation.
