Abstract

The use and maintenance of underground spaces in bedrock, e.g. those formed upon the completion of mining operations, often gives rise to discussion of other uses of remaining tunneling systems. Filling tunnels with rock blocks, concrete and groundwater is not always an optimum decision because this environmentally controlled work requires funding. Another option is to establish underground laboratories (UL?s) at these locations and to use underground spaces for non-quarrying purposes. However, the transition of such voids from production to research and business is a challenge. The EU Project "Baltic Sea Underground Innovation Network" (BSUIN) offers new innovative methods for and solutions to the more efficient use of individual UL?s in the Underground Laboratories Consortium in the Baltic Sea region. The consortium consists of existing or planned laboratories where geological (e.g. geophysical and radiation) properties, organization structure, safety regulations, accessibility, present and future use and innovation handling are studied in detail. Because of coordinated efforts, networking will become more efficient and the laboratories will function for innovation and business development. The existing consortium consists of six laboratories from various Baltic countries: ?sp? Hard Rock Laboratory, Oskarshamn, Sweden, ; Forschungs- und Lehrbergwerk - Research and Education Mine "Reiche Zeche", Freiberg, Germany; Callio Lab in Pyh?salmi mine, Pyh?j?rvi, Finland; KGHM S.A. mining company, Poland, together with their research organization KGHM CUPRUM which proposes a conceptual UL prototype, is located in a KGHM's deep copper mine; an underground laboratory of Khlopin Institute, St Petersburg, Russia; Ruskeala Underground Laboratory.
