GRAPH THEORY IN THE SPATIAL ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL SYSTEMS: METHODICAL TECHNIQUES OF REGULARITIES SEARCHING
Abstract
We have proposed an approach to establish spatial patterns on the application of graphs theory. Traditionally, the theory of graphs is used in spatial studies to quantify the geographical position and its various aspects. Graph theory is a section of qualitative geometry, the differences of which are that it operates with dimensionless quantities, does not use the concepts of angle, and line length. It operates with spatial elements - points, lines, surfaces, volumes, and relations (connections) between them. Differentiation of social processes forms spatial systems "Core-Periphery", which we model as a flat graph. The vertices of the graph are the administrative units of spatial systems. The edges of the graph reflect the presence of a neighborhood and a common border. Due to this property of topological space as connectivity in substantiating the methods of searching for spatial patterns, we consider the following positions. 1. Conditional topological distance acts as a unit of spatial measurement: one edge of the graph - one distance. 2. The administrative units’ combination of the same topological distance from the center forms topological centrifugal bands. Thus, the Core is the zero band; neighbors of the 1st order form the 1st band, etc. The topological band for further spatial analysis receives generalized socio-economic indicators. They are formed as the average of the administrative units’ parameters that formed the topological band. In future, the topological space is morphologically transformed from a network structure into a linear one, where the only unit for calculating the distance is the topological distance. This approach to the spatial search patterns is based on the materials of socio-economic parameters of Kyiv and Kherson regions of Ukraine. The proposed approach combines the advantages of topological and metric measurements of geospace.
