RECENT CHANGES IN THE SNOW COVER DURATION IN BULGARIA - PRELIMINARY RESULTS

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Dimitar Nikolov, Cvetan Dimitrov, Radoslav Evgeniev)

Snow cover is an indicator of the fluctuating climate, resulting from the change in the regime of winter precipitations and air temperatures. Our previous studies have revealed significant decreasing of the seasonal snow cover maxima and the precipitation amounts in the highest mountainous regions of Bulgaria, which is however not so strong at lower altitudes. Current research summarizes our last findings about one other characteristic of the snow cover - its duration. This is presented as annual number of days wi...

ANALYSIS OF THE VARIABILITY OF THE WINTER PRECIPITATIONS AND TEMPERATURES IN TWO MOUNTAIN REGIONS OF BULGARIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2022-11-15, Dimitar Nikolov, Cvetan Dimitrov)

Snow cover is an indicator of the fluctuating climate, resulting from the change in the regime of winter precipitations and air temperatures. Our previous study has revealed significant decreasing of the snow cover in the high altitudes of Vitosha mountain. The current sturdy is now focused on these two meteorological variable - the type and amount of the winter precipitations and the seasonal change of the air temperature. Monthly and seasonal values of precipitation amounts, number of days with different type of...

ASSESSMENT OF THE LONG TERM VARIABILITY OF THE SNOW COVER IN THE VITOSHA MOUNTAIN

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Dimitar B. Nikolov, Cvetan Dimitrov)

Snow cover is an important factor in mountainous regions regarding water resources, vegetation and economic issues for the ski and spa resorts. Snow is also an indicator of the fluctuating climate, resulting from the change in the regime of winter precipitation and air temperature. This study is focused on the changes in the regime of the snow cover in the Vitosha mountain. The monthly values of number of days with snow cover, seasonal maximums and monthly averages of the snow cover from 5 meteorological stations ...

STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE NORTH-ATLANTIC OSCILLATION ON THE SNOW COVER CONDITIONS IN BULGARIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Dimitar B. Nikolov, Cvetan Dimitrov)

The NAO index has a strong influence on weather over West Europe and the Mediterranean basin but less prominent over the east part of Europe. The aim of this study is the assessment of the influence of the North-Atlantic oscillation on the snow cover conditions in Bulgaria. The winter (December thru March) station-based index of the NAO is used for the current survey as well as data for snow cover maximums from 10 meteorological stations, 4 of them mountainous, for the main period 1930-2020. The linear relation be...
