ANTHROPOGENIC IMPRINTS ON THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AND WATER RESOURCES IN THE CHEPINSKA AND CHEPELARSKA RIVER BASINS (WESTERN RHODOPES, BULGARIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2026, Emilia Tcherkezova, Kalin Seymenov, Krasya Kolcheva, Elitsa Zareva, Dragomir Vassilev)

Anthropogenic imprints, including hydromorphological pressure and illegal land use through unauthorised dumping and wastewater discharge, are various forms of human activity that often have lasting impacts on the natural environment. Despite this, integrating them into ecological assessments and water and natural resource management remains underexplored at the river basin scale. This study aims to investigate and analyse illegal dumping and pressures on freshwater resources in the Chepinska and Chepelarska River ...

TYPES OF ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACT ON WATER QUALITY IN THE CHEPINSKA AND CHEPELARSKA RIVER BASINS USING WATER QUALITY INDICES AND AIRBUS DEFENCE AND SPACE PLEIADES-1A AND SPOT 6 SATELLITE DATA

(STEF92 Technology, 2026, Emilia Tcherkezova, Marian Varbanov, Gergana Metodieva, Kristina Gartsiyanova, Stefan Genchev)

The aim of this work is twofold: to identify the dominant types of anthropogenic impact on SWQ in the Chepinska and Chepelarska River basins to localise the hot spots of pollution; and to obtain the main land cover units from Very High Resolution (VHR) Airbus Pléiades-1A and SPOT 6 imagery. The assessment of anthropogenic impacts on SWQ is based on an analysis of more than 10 physicochemical parameters, and the CCME WQI, WAWQI, and HPI indices were used. The results show different types of water pollution in the ...

IDENTIFICATION OF URBAN LANDSCAPE UNITS BASED ON SENTINEL-2A SATELLITE IMAGERY AND ILLEGAL LANDFILLS: CASE STUDY FROM VELINGRAD CITY (BULGARIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2023-12-15, Emilia Tcherkezova, Elitsa Zareva, Velimira Stoyanova, Dragomir Vassilev, Rositsa Georgieva)

The variety of urban landscapes, especially of urban green spaces provide a wide range of human well-being opportunities, physical recreation, sport activities, and urban heat mitigation. Therefore, there are many studies applying remote sensing and GIS methods, which were related to the sustainable city development focused on the -green network-, -green spaces- and land use. Conversely, illegal landfills in and around settlements and rivers have a negative anthropogenic impact on the environment. Therefore, their...

HYDRO-GEOMORPHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTORS FOR DETECTION OF FLOOD-PRONE AREAS USING HIGH-RESOLUTION UAV PHOTOGRAMMETRY DATA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Emilia Tcherkezova)

Flood events, as well as the channel and floodplain landforms are crucial for the transport and spatial distribution of heavy metals and metalloids in soils in the river valleys. The paper outlines the results of obtained preliminary indications about the flood proneness of two study areas located in the valleys of Ogosta River near the village of Gorna Kovachitsa and Lom River near the village of Vasilovtsi (NW Bulgaria) based on hydro-geomorphological indices. The detection of flood-prone areas has been done usi...

APPLYING UAV PHOTOGRAMMETRY DATA FOR HIGH-RESOLUTION GEOMORPHOLOGICAL MAPPING OF A PART OF THE LOM RIVER VALLEY NEAR THE VILLAGE OF VASILOVTSI (BULGARIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Emilia Tcherkezova, Tsvetan Kotsev, Georgi Zhelezov, Velimira Stoyanova)

Floodplains are complex systems which include a wide number of socio-economic activities like agriculture, freshwater fisheries, electricity from power plants and others. They have often highly dynamic property, due to the alternation of fluvial processes, floods, and ongoing sediment transport, as well as of environmental specifics and natural or anthropogenic processes. In the context of the investigation of soil pollution with heavy metals in the riverine floodplains, the availability of geomorphological maps a...

LAND COVER CHANGES IN THE OGOSTA VALLEY FOR THE PERIOD 1993-2019

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Velimira Stoyanova, Tsvetan Kotsev, Emilia Tcherkezova, Georgi Zhelezov, Nelly Koleva)

The current research aims to present land cover changes for the period 1993-2019 in the arsenic-contaminated Ogosta River valley in the context of the contaminant dispersal in the soils of the river floodplain caused by the agricultural practices and land use. The investigation is conducted for two test sites situated in the upper and lower stretch of the valley near the villages of Gorna Kovatchitsa and Mihaylovo, respectively. The changes are established for the fourth level of the CORINE Land Cover nomenclature...
