SOIL WATERLOGGING STRESS COMPENSATED BY ROOT SYSTEM ADAPTATION IN A POT EXPERIMENT WITH SWEET CORN ZEA MAYS VAR. SACCHARATE

(STEF92 Technology, 2022-11-15, Andis Kalvāns, Gunta Kalvāne)

Soil waterlogging due to excess moisture resulting in hypoxic soil conditions can have detrimental effect on development of many dryland plants growing in locations with temporary water logged soils. Oxygen stress in hypoxic soils can lead to decrease root water uptake and transpiration compared to well aerated soil conditions. In turn reduction of transpiration have a positive effect on soil water budget facilitating the preservation of waterlogged state of the soil. We investigate this phenomenon in a greenhouse...

PHENOLOGY OF SPRING BARLEY (HORDEUM VULGARE) CULTIVARS REFLECT ADAPTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE: CASE STUDY OF PRIEKULI, LATVIA, 1928-2019

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Gunta Kalvāne, Liga Dzedule, Andis Kalvāns)

Climate change is having a major impact on the agricultural sector, affecting crop phenology and yields. The spring barley is one of the three major crops in Baltic region. The study has analysed the phenological phases of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare), evaluating the onset of three phases, sowing, heading and fully ripe, and the duration between phases over a near century (1928–2019) in Priekuli, Latvia. We have evaluated application of a phenological model for different varieties of spring barley. Air temperat...
