MODELING OF GROUNDWATER AVAILABILITY FOR PRODUCTION, LATVIA CASE

(STEF92 Technology, 2026, Kaspars Krauklis, Irina Eglite, Inta Volodko, Ilona Dzenite)

The volume of accessible groundwater in Latvia from a chosen aquifer is generally sufficient for a household or company to install a borehole with a flow rate of 10 m3/day or 100 m3/day. In this case, the main legal restrictions concern lowering the groundwater table to the minimum permissible level and the required water level reserve relative to the top of the well's filter column. Latvia is rich in groundwater water; for decision-makers to install a water intake well, it is usually sufficient to analyze data fr...

PUBLICATION OF DATA FROM THE LATVIAN REGIONAL HYDROGEOLOGICAL MODEL LAMO4

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-12-15, Irīna Eglīte, Kaspars Krauklis)

Geographic information systems (GIS) are based on the approach of displaying data from individual layers, where a manageable number of geospatial objects are displayed within a single layer. The entire content of a hydrogeological model (HM) can only be partially included within this framework. HM input data and modeling results as layer surface maps are a way to easily, clearly, and simply publish the model content and simulation experiment results. However, this approach is not sufficient for regional HMs. Regio...

MODELLING OF THE HYDROLOGICAL REGIME OF THE TEICHI NATURE RESERVE

(STEF92 Technology, 2022-11-15, Irīna Eglīte, Kaspars Krauklis, Inta Lāce)

Teichi bog is largest intact moss bog in the Baltics states. The article considers the hydrological exchange process of the bog and surrounding areas. It plays an important role in the ecosystem, as well as a factor in stabilizing the water level, as bog peat in its natural state contains 88%-97% water. It belongs to raised bogs, since its upper layer is located above the surrounding relief. Replenishment of water resources in the Teichi Nature Reserve occurs mainly due to precipitation. In turn, the bog with surf...

DEPRESSION CONE MIS-SHAPENNING DUE TO VARIABLE PERMEABILITY OF A DOLOMITE EXCAVATION AQUIFER IN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Aivars Spalviņš, Kaspars Krauklis, Irīna Eglīte, Inta Lāce)

If the place hydrogeological conditions are uniform (invariable aquifer transmissivity, no impact of hydrogeological network) then the quarry depression cone and the pumping rate for the quarry draining can be obtained by using analytical methods. The dolomite aquifer at the Iecava district in Latvia included large impervious areas. Due to this fact, appliance of analytical methods cannot give the right depression cone. The local hydrogeological model (HM) was applied for obtaining the depression cone of the dolom...

MODELLING OF WALLS FOR REDUCING CONTAMINATION THAT IS CAUSED BY A FORMER DUMP SITE IN RIGA CITY, LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Aivars Spalviņš, Irīna Eglīte, Inta Lāce, Kaspars Krauklis)

Building of a shopping center was planed in Riga city, Latvia. Unfortunately, the center was located in the former dump site place where the about eight meters thick waste body contained an irregular mixture of oil products, Phenols, Detergents and metals: Copper, Lead and Chromium. It was presumed that these dissolved in groundwater contaminants should enter the nearby lake and dich. It was found out that cleaning of the place was not time and cost effective. It was necessary to reduce the concentration of these ...

UNSYMMETRICAL DEPRESSION CONES OF DOLOMITE EXCAVATION QUARRIES THAT ARE SITUATED CLOSE TO LARGE SURFACE WATER BODIES IN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Aivars Spalviņš, Kaspars Krauklis, Inta Lāce)

The case is considered when at the Koknese district in Latvia the hydrogeological situation for dolomite excavation quarries is heterogeneous. The place geological build is complex and the quarries are situated close to large surface water bodies represented by the Daugava river and by the Urgu reservoir. The depression cones of the quarries were obtained by using the local hydrogeological model (HM). The primary data for creating the local HM were provided by the regional HM of Latvia LAMO4. The Groundwater Vista...

HYDROGEOLOGICAL MODELLING OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN DOLOMITE EXCAVATION QUARRIES AT LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Kaspars Krauklis, Irīna Eglīte, Inta Lāce)

In the Ropazu district at Latvia, a set of dolomite excavation quarries is located. Because the quarries must by drained by pumping out groundwater, depression cones appear in the quarry areas and around them. The research targets were investigation of the interaction between the quarries, evaluation of adverse changes caused by them in the groundwater regimes of the nature reserve wetland area «Lielie Kangari» and in flows of hydrographical network. The research was carried out by applying the hydrogeological mod...

MODELLING OF THE FOREST MELIORATION SYSTEM AT LATVIA.A CASE STUDY

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Aivars Spalviņš, Irīna Eglīte, Inta Lāce, Kaspars Krauklis)

The climate in Latvia is moderately warm and humid. To provide optimal groundwater heads (levels) for plant and tree growth, agricultural and forest melioration systems (AMS and FMS) have been set up in many places. Reconstruction of the FMS ?Zamelu-Tisu mezs? will be carried out. To assess the reconstruction impact, hydrogeological and hydrological conditions in and around the FMS territory were studied. To accomplish this task, specialists of Riga Technical University for the study area developed and used the lo...

PROSPECTS FOR REMEDIATION OF CONTAMINATED GROUNDWATER AT THE INCUKALNS DISTRICT OF LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, sc.ing. Aivars Spalvins, Inta Lace, Kaspars Krauklis, Tatjana Sorokina, Henning Wallner)

At the Incukalns district of Latvia, two gravels pits from 1956 until 1981 were filled up by liquid sulphuric goudron (mixture of sulphure acids, oil products and other hazardous substances). These dump sites were informatively named as the Northern and Southern pools. During sixty years, the pools are polluting groundwater that moves towards the Gauja river. Waste from the pools will be excavated in the near future. However, the contaminant plumes will continue their movement. Scientists of Riga Technical Univers...
