ORGANIC SUBSTANCES IN WOODCHIP AQUEOUS LEACHATES AND THEIR ECOTOXICITY

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Kateřina Schrimpelová)

Woodchip material is one of the most promising fill media for denitrifying bioreactors. Woodchip denitrifying bioreactors are used for nitrate reduction in the outlets of drainage systems, shallow groundwaters, etc. Despite their overall positive effect, undesirable leaching of organic compounds from the fill medium can occur during a bioreactor?s start-up phase. The released organic compounds can cause oxygen depletion and some of them can have a toxic effect on biota. The paper presents the quality of leachates ...

PHOSPHORUS REMOVAL FROM AGRICULTURAL RUNOFF BY ENHANCED DENITRIFYING WOODCHIP BIOREACTORS

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Kateřina Schrimpelová)

The water pollution caused by nutrients has become a problem, especially in agricultural areas. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) can cause the eutrophication of surface waters, and problems with their use as drinking water sources. One of the possible solutions is to employ denitrifying bioreactors, which are used for the reduction of high nitrate concentrations in shallow groundwaters. Our research was focused on the enhancement of these bioreactors with steel byproducts. These materials release Fe, which causes t...

ASSESSMENT OF RIVER WATER QUALITY IN THE MORAVIAN KARST, CZECH REPUBLIC

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Jitka Mala, Katerina Schrimpelova, RNDr. Antonin Tuma, Zuzana Bilkova, Karel Hrich)

The Moravian Karst, situated in the eastern part of the Czech Republic, is the most extensive and most developed karst area in the Bohemian Massif. To protect its unique environment, the Moravian Karst was declared a Protected Landscape Area in 1956. Despite the protection, pollution occurs in some disappearing streams both on the earthпїЅs surface and underground, in caves formed by karst processes. The aim of the study was to assess the hydrochemical status of several selected streams and identify the sources of...

LEACHABILITY OF DENITRIFYING BIOREACTOR FILLINGS

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Katerina Schrimpelova, Eliska Marsalkova, Jitka Mala, Zuzana Bilkova, Karel Hrich)

Denitrifying bioreactors can be used to reduce high nitrate concentrations in agricultural runoff in situ. They operate on the basis of the flow of nitrate-rich water through a filtration medium containing biodegradable organic matter that serves as an organic carbon source for denitrification bacteria. However, undesirable excessive leaching of organic compounds from the bioreactor fillings can occur, especially in the start-up phase. The paper presents the results of static leaching tests conducted on six differ...
