A GEOCHEMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL PARADIGM FOR AN EVALUATION OF THE STATE OF SURFACE WATER STREAMS IN IMPACT ZONES PERTAINING TO THE TECHNOGENIC FORMATIONS OF THE ORE MINING INDUSTRY

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, V. A. Gromova, Olga Lipatnikova, T. V. Shestakova)

The surface water streams in the ore mining areas are subject to intense contamination with heavy metals and toxic elements. This type of pollution is a widespread problem nowadays. Detecting the geochemical patterns of the migration of heavy metals and toxic elements, together with their impact on natural environments, is a key aspect of ecological and geochemical research. This study is proposed in order to evaluate the state of the surface water streams in impact zones pertaining to the technogenic formations o...

USE OF HEAVY METAL SPECIATION DATA FOR EFFECTIVE THERMODYNAMIC PARAMETERS DETERMINATION OF ABSORBED HEAVY METALS IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Olga Lipatnikova, D.V. Grichuk)

It is rather difficult to apply thermodynamic simulation in the forecast of heavy metals migration in aquatic ecosystems due to the fact that the composition of bottom sediments in reservoirs is very changeable and uncertain. An alternative approach is proposed for solving similar problems based on the use of empirical information on heavy metal speciation in bottom sediments. This type of information can be obtained using sequential extraction scheme (for example Tessier scheme). Based on these data, effective th...

USE OF PYROPHOSPHATE EXTRACT TO DETERMINE ORGANIC-BOUND FORMS OF COPPER AND IRON IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS: THE CASE STUDY OF THE VYSHNEVOLOTSKY RESERVOIR, RUSSIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-11-20, Olga Lipatnikova, Tatiana Shestakova, Daria Podlepina)

Speciation of heavy metals in bottom sediments defines their ecotoxicity and mobility and therefore needs to be studied thoroughly. Usually single and sequential extraction techniques are used to determine water-soluble, exchangeable, specifically sorbed and carbonates, bound to organic matter, bound to Fe and Mn hydroxides and residual forms. Bottom sediments of the Vyshnevolotsky reservoir (the Upper Volga, the Central region of Russia) were chosen for the research. Lithological and mineral composition of sample...
