AN EXPERIMENT OF AUTOMATIC CLASSIFICATION AND MAPPING OF THE LANDFORMS OF THE YAMAL PENINSULA

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-15, Sergey Kharchenko)

This study investigates the potential of automated geomorphological mapping using geomorphometric analysis and machine learning on the Yamal Peninsula, Russia. The research aims to classify landforms based solely on geomorphometric characteristics, bypassing traditional manual interpretation of aerial imagery and digital elevation models (DEMs). The study utilized a DEM of the Yamal Peninsula and a reference geomorphological map, including 10 distinct landform types. A total of 119 geomorphometric variables, inclu...

IMPORTANCE OF GEOMORPHOMETRIC AND GEOLOGIC VARIABLES FOR AUTOMATED DELINEATION OF GEOMORPHOLOGICAL UNITS (ON THE EXAMPLE OF YAMAL PENINSULA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-15, Sergey Kharchenko)

This study assesses the efficiency of various geomorphometric terrain characteristics and a number of categorical geological parameters in training statistical models to create geomorphological maps. The study area is the central sector of the western coast of Yamal Peninsula (S = 10 400 km2). The terrain is exceptionally flat and morphologically similar, but the genesis and age of the surfaces are diverse. The background surface type is marine terraces of various (Middle Pleistocene to Holocene) ages, subsequentl...

AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION OF EXOGENIC LANDFORM TYPES ON THE ARCTIC TERRAIN USING SPECTRAL GEOMORPHOMETRIC VARIABLES (EXAMPLE OF THE EUROPEAN PART OF THE RUSSIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Sergey Kharchenko)

Possibility of using of the spectral geomorphometric variables for automatic landform types classification was estimated. The area of our interest - European part of the Russian sector of Arctic region. There are four main types of landforms with exogenic origin on the territory: 1) glacial and 2) glaciofluvial accumulative terrains, 3) ridges and hills terrain from glacial exaration, 4) wave terrain from glacial exaration. These landforms types cover from 55% to 80% in the different parts of the area of interest....

THE SPECTRAL FINGERPRINTS OF TOPOGRAPHICAL PATTERN OF THE NEAR-CASPIAN "BAER-S MOUNDS" TERRITORY AND AUTOMATIC SEARCH OF SIMILAR LANDFORM REGIONS IN THE WORLD

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Sergey Kharchenko)

The origin of the unusual landforms of Baer?s mounds on the Near-Caspian lowland is not well understood. One of the possible approaches to the understanding of natural history of the region is searching of similar regions. In the many papers the problem of mounds origin is revised but with not of review of geomorphological analogues in the World. Some author states that are not exist of similar landforms anywhere else. The topography characterize by the sets of parallel ridges and hollows / valleys. Range of lengt...

USING OF THE SPECTRAL GEOMORPHOMETRIC CHARACTERISTICS FOR AUTOMATIZED CLASSIFICATION OF LANDFORMS (ON THE EXAMPLE OF AUSTRALIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Sergey Kharchenko)

The algorithm for computation of the spectral characteristics of terrain was prepared. The periodicity of Earth surface is specific В«fingerprintВ» of the cooperation of geological structure, exogenic processes and history of nature development for geomorphologically detached areas. For computing we used DEMs and 2D discrete Fourier transform with moving quadratic window of different sizes. Matrix of elevations decomposes in the Fourier image which defines harmonic waves set. All set of waves determine height fiel...

COMPARISON OF APPROXIMATION QUALITY OF EARTHS SURFACE FOR DIFFERENT LANDFORM TYPES (ON EXAMPLES OF ALGEBRAIC AND TRIGONOMETRIC TRENDS)

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Sergey Kharchenko)

Quality of trend-surface approximation of four sites on East European plain was estimated. The sites were selected under condition of location in the landform's regions with different genesis of Earth's surface according to Geomorphological map of USSR 1:2500000. This regions includes are initial plain (Caspian lowland), areas of moraine (Smolensk-Moscow upland) and erosional (Central Russian upland) relief, structural and erosional UralпїЅs foothills. Two types of approximation methods were used: 2D algebraic pol...
