A MINERALOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL ASSESSMENT OF THE TAILING IMPOUNDMENT AT RUDNANY DEPOSIT, SLOVAKIA

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2010, T. KLIMKO, J. MICHNOVA, L. JURKOVIC B. Lalinska)

Mineralogical composition of mining wastes deposited in voluminous tailing impoundments around the world is the key factor that controls retention and release of pollutants. Here we report geochemical and mineralogical investigation of one tailing impoundment from Slovakia. Ore deposit RudЕ€any was exploited from the end of 19th century and at 1963 the ore started to be extracted by flotation process (barite, siderite and sulfides). Waste after flotation was deposited into one tailing impoundment, which carries ap...

COMPLEX EVALUATION OF TAILING IMPOUNDMENTS ON EXAMPLE RUDNANY, SLOVAKIA

Slovak republic committed to implement into legislative direction of European parliament and European Council 2006/21/ES from March of 15th of 2006. The direction contains conditions about disposal with wastes of mining industry, which changes and adds direction 2004/35/ES. This legislative required creation of complex evaluation methodology of different types of mining wastes. Tailing pond represents area for permanently or temporary deposition of mainly hydraulically consigned mud/sediment (waste). Consigned mud...

MINERALOGY AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF OCHREOUS SEDIMENTS FROM VARIOUS SB DEPOSITS (SLOVAKIA)

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2009, B. Lalinska, K. Homolova, L. Piliarova)

The objective of our study was to examine the mineralogy and chemical composition of ochreous sediments accumulated in the area of four abandoned Sb deposits from Slovakia. Each of them is from different geological settings and there are also differences between types of mineralization and mine processing. Samples were collected mainly from mine drainages and fraction under 0.063 mm was analyzed using conventional methods, including X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and sequentia...

SEQUENCE ANALYSES OF STREAM SEDIMENTS FROM ABANDONED SB-MINING AREAS (POPROC AND DUBRAVA) IN SLOVAKIA

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2008, P. Sottnik, B. Lalinska, M. Sutriepka, L. Jurkovic)

Sb-mineralization had been exploited in many localities in Slovakia. Contamination of environment by Sb, As and other heavy metals is specific problem of Slovak mining regions. Natural background for groundwater in Slovakia was appointed to 1 $\mu$g/l for Sb and 5 $\mu$g/l. Two localities Poproc (in eastern part of Slovakia) and Dubrava (in The Low Tatras) are abandoned Mining areas where the stibnite ores had been exploited for many years. These areas represent high potential environmental risk because of transpo...

SURROUNDING OF ABANDONED SB DEPOSIT POPROC (SLOVAKIA) - PRELIMINARY DATA FROM GEOCHEMICAL AND MINERALOGICAL RESEARCH

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2008, L. Jurkovic, B. Lalinska, M. Chovan, P. Sottnik, O. Lintnerova, M. Jankular, M. Vaculik)

Environmental large-scale contamination in surrounding of abandoned Sb-deposits in Slovakia by toxic elements (Sb, As, Zn, Pb, Cu...) as result of long-time mining activity is still undiscovered field. Surroundings of abandoned antimony deposit Popro\vc bear high concentrations of toxic contaminants mainly of sulfide relative minerals. Pollution resulting from long-time mining activity was observed in area adjacent to adit Agnes showing Sb concentrations within values 4 700 – 10 000 mg.kg-1 and maximum As concen...

ZERO-VALENT IRON AS APPROPRIATE REACTIVE MATERIAL FOR SB AND AS REMOVAL - THE APPLICATION OF INSITU PERMEABLE REACTIVE BARRIER TECHNOLOGY

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2008, B. Lalinska, P. Sottnik)

Antimony mineralization has been intensively exploited at numerous deposits in Slovakia from 17th century until a while since. Weathering and dissolution processes in the environment of mine tailings and closed mines, mobilize elevated levels of toxic elements such as arsenic and antimony, which represent dangerous contaminants for the surrounding ecosystem. The problem of contaminated groundwater should be solved and one of the possible remediation method is the Permeable reactive barrier system (PRB). The choice...
