MAGNETISM OF STREET DUST FROM SOFIA CITY – QUANTITATIVE INDICATION ABOUT DEGREE OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2010, D. Jordanova, D. Todorova, TS. Tsacheva)

Qualitative picture of the degree of environmental pollution in Sofia city was obtained using magnetic signature of road dust. Collection of 117 samples was studied by magnetic methods and SEM microscopy. The most polluted points are central part of the city and main crossroads. Both irregular-shaped and spherical particles of high-iron content are responsible for the enhanced magnetic signal in the road dust.

SEM-EDX IDENTIFICATION OF PARTICLES FROM FOG IN AN INDUSTRIALLY POLLUTED REGION OF CZECH REPUBLIC

(SGEM Scientific GeoConference, 2010, V. Stoyanova, A. Shoumkova, J. Fisak, TS. Tsacheva)

The properties of individual particles, rather than bulk aerosol characteristics, determine the environmental and health impact of the atmospheric pollutants. Single particles have been sampled during 30 fog episodes at the mount Milesovka (837 m a.s.l.) located in the industrially polluted area of north Bohemian brown coalfield. More than 2000 of these solid, water insoluble particles, collected from May 2006 till July 2007, have been analyzed by SEM-EDX and classified according to their shape, size and elemental...
