ELEPHANT HERDING OPTIMIZATION FOR ENHANCED FORECASTING OF INFLOW TIME SERIES USING STATISTICAL AND MACHINE LEARNING MODELS

(STEF92 Technology, 2025-12-27, Angela Neagoe, Eliza-Isabela Tică, Bogdan Popa)

Accurate forecasting of reservoir inflows based on historical data is essential for effective water resources planning and management. Water flow forecasting presents a major challenge due to the nonlinear, non-stationary, stochastic, and highly noisy nature of water flows in rivers and inflows into reservoirs. These complex characteristics hinder the modeling process and limit the effectiveness of conventional prediction methods, making it difficult to achieve high accuracy results. This study explores the use of...

MULTICRITERIA EVALUATION AND DECISION SCENARIOS FOR THE INTEGRATION OF THE LIMBERG III HPP INTO THE ENERGY SYSTEM

(STEF92 Technology, 2025-12-27, Adrian-Claudiu Stroe, Eliza-Isabela Tică, Angela Neagoe, Bogdan Popa)

This study presents a multicriteria evaluation for the integration and development of the Limberg Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant (PSHP) in Austria. The research aims to identify the most sustainable and efficient solution to enhance energy storage capacity and operational flexibility within the national energy system. Three development scenarios were analyzed using a Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) based on the Analytic Network Process (ANP) implemented in Super Decisions (SD) software. Scenario 1 involves...

PROGRAMMING TOOLS FOR INFLOWS FORECASTING IN HYDROPOWER RESERVOIRS

(STEF92 Technology, 2025-12-27, Bogdan Popa, Angela Neagoe, Eliza-Isabela Tică, Florica Popa)

Within the framework of the iAMP-Hydro EU project, two dedicated work packages address the challenges of inflow and power forecasting for both run-of-river hydropower plants and large hydropower reservoirs. These tasks aim to improve short-term and medium-term operational planning by integrating advanced data-driven techniques into hydrological forecasting chains. Five initial validation sites, three located in Spain and two in Greece, were analyzed using a suite of statistical and machine learning techniques, inc...

INFLUENCE OF SUPPORT SCHEME ON ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION FROM RES IN ROMANIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Bogdan Popa)

Renewable energy sources (RES) are of great interest across the world, since it can be used to obtain clean, green energy, thus minimizing the environmental pollution. Romania has an important potential for development of renewable energy, in the hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass fields. But the market of RES expands or shrinks being influenced by policies, technologies and financial support change. The transposition of Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament on the promotion of the use of energy...

ASSESSMENT OF POWER GENERATION LOSSES FOR GOLESTI HYDROPOWER PLANT, ROMANIA, DUE TO A RESERVOIR MANAGEMENT PLAN REQUIRED BY EUTROPHICATION

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Liana Ioana Vuta, Bogdan Popa, Gabriela Elena Dumitran, Assist. Drd. Eliza-Isabela, Florica Popa)

This paper presents an assessment of power generation losses of a hydropower plant (HPP) due to an imposed reservoir management plan and comparisons in terms of monetary value with the existing management plan but with an eutrophic reservoir. The study case is represented by Gole?ti reservoir, which is a shallow reservoir in Romania, and the associated HPP. Gole?ti reservoir is an artificial lake of medium size, which has a 55пїЅ106 m3 volume and a maximum depth of 32 m. Its use is complex: it allows flood control...

EVALUATION OF AN EXISTING SMALL HYDROPOWER PLANT WITH VAPIDRO-ASTE SOFTWARE

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Bogdan POPA, Florica POPA, Alexandru MOLDOVEANU, Eliza-Isabela TICA)

Many informatics tools have been developed based on extensive databases related to terrain modeling and technical objects of the existing hydropower developments. Among them, VAPIDRO-ASTE can be distinguished as a powerful and demonstrated tool, which can be used either for the evaluation of the hydropower potential and the optimization of the complex hydropower development of a river sector, or for the evaluation of an existing hydropower development in order to establish the need of the refurbishment and/or reha...
