ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY AND PRODUCTIVITY OF LODGEPOLE PINE GROWN IN THE WESTERN PART OF LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Linards Sisenis, Irina Pilvere, Baiba Jansone, Dace Brizga, Edgars Dubrovskis)

The research aims to examine the pace of growth of lodgepole pine, the amount of damage caused by biungulates and the quality of trunks for lodgepole pine provenances growing in the western part of Latvia in the areas around Ugale and Kuldiga, identifying the most damage-resistant and promising provenances for cultivation in Latvia. In Latvia, foresters and plant breeders have been working for years to increase the quality and productivity of local tree species, while assessing various forest stand management patt...

FIRE SAFETY IN PEAT EXTRACTION SITES IN LATVIA

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Dace Brizga, Edgars Dubrovskis, Olga Miezīte, Linards Sisenis, Kristine Kirsbauma)

Today about 10% of Latvia's territory is occupied by peatlands (645,100 ha), but the extraction of peat happens in only 4% (25,739 ha) of the total. In regulatory documents peat bogs are mentioned as having a very high probability of flammability (in the context of climate change and other natural elements: drought, heat, lightning and deliberate or unintentional human activity). This indicates the need to improve fire safety by conducting research and improving regulatory frameworks. The aim of the study was to a...

NATURAL REGENERATION OF PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. FROM SEED TREES IN POOR MINERAL SOILS

(STEF92 Technology, 2024-11-01, Olga Miezit, Edgars Dubrovskis, Dace Brizga, Aija Berzina)

In economic forests, the productivity of forest stands should be increased as much as possible, because the global demand for timber is growing every year. Planted forest trees can be realized using the advantages of selection, naturally regenerated - faster growth can be achieved by improving the growing conditions and limiting factors that reduce or delay the formation of growth. Data were collected in 6-year-old P.sylvestris forest stands Cladinoso-callunosa and Vacciniosa. The plots were established in an area...

PROTECTION OF PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. STANDS FROM CURCULIONIDAE DAMAGE

(STEF92 Technology, 2022-12-27, Olga Miezīte, Baiba Jansone, Dace Brizga, Linards Sisenis)

One of the long-term goals of the certification systems (FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)) of sustainably managed forests that provide both social, environmental, and economic benefits is to completely phase out the use of chemical pesticides to protect planting material. It is in the interest of both nurseries and forest owners to find successful alternative, environmentally friendly solutions to safeguard pine saplings against Curculionidae. The stud...

DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS` COMPETENCE IN THE CIVIL PROTECTION STUDIES

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, sc.ing Vija Ozolina, student Dace Brizga, student Uldis Karlsons, silv. Linards Sisenis, paed. sc.ing. Ludis Peks)

All over the world, including Latvia, terrorism, warfare and other threats are on the increase, and risk prevention and minimization of the consequences of these events are associated with civil protection actualization and developing the competence necessary for that. This state of events is recognized through the replacement of the former Civil Protection Law with the Civil Protection and Disaster Management Law, proclaimed in 2016. The aim of the study was to evaluate the dynamics of the students` competence in...
