CAVE AS A KEY TO UNDERSTAND THE GEOLOGY OF AN AREA. AN EXAMPLE FROM RATEI CAVE (SOUTH CARPATHIANS, ROMANIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Maria-Lidia Nuțu-Dragomir)

Ratei Cave, with its 7,224 m length, provides a good opportunity to investigate the geology and tectonics of Leaota Mountains, the eastern end of the South Carpathians. The geological observations reveal that Ratei Cave is mainly developed in Upper Jurassic limestones, but siliciclastic and metamorphic rocks are encountered in different locations along the cave passages. The stratigraphic succession on the 69 m elevation range, which represents the positive vertical extent between the entrance and the cave end, co...

COLD SPRING WATER CHEMICAL IMPRINT IN VRANCEA REGION (SUBCARPATHIAN NAPPE, ROMANIA) FOR ASSESSING THE FLUIDS ORIGIN

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Maria - Lidia Nutu - Dragomir)

The investigated cold spring (10.4-10.9 ?C) is located onto a reverse fault zone within the Subcarpathian nappe (Vrancea region). A small travertine deposit has precipitated along the stream. The spring-water samples display an essentially calcium-bicarbonate chemical facies, indicative of a prevalently meteoric water contribution. Still significant Na and Cl concentrations - each of them amounting, when expressed as miliequivalents, to about one third of the HCO3 concentration - also suggest mixing with a signifi...

SEDIMENTARY CHARACTERISTICS OF A PERMIAN CONTINENTAL SUCCESSION IN SIRINIA BASIN (SOUTH CARPATHIANS, ROMANIA)

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Maria-Lidia Nutu-Dragomir)

The Permian sedimentary succession exposed in Sirinia Basin (South Carpathians, Romania) provides a record of mixed siliciclastic-volcanic rocks. The siliciclastic rocks are represented by conglomerate, sandstone and claystone, which are grouped into nine lithofacies (Gmm/mg, St, Sh, Sm, Sr, Fl, Fr, P) occur in a predictable order as repeated fining-upward cycles. Groups of associated facies are arranged into five distinct architectural elements (gravel channels, ribbon-channel, sandy channels, laminated sand shee...
