ABANDONED LOCATIONS AFTER MINERAL EXPLORATION - ENVIRONMENTAL BURDEN OR PERSPECTIVE SOURCES OF RAW MATERIALS?

(STEF92 Technology, 2022-11-15, Peter Šottník, Tomáš Faragó, Ondrej Brachtýr, Jaroslav Vozár)

Mining wastes represent a specific type of waste and, like sites after mining, represent sites where a comprehensive assessment of pollution at these sites needs to be approached, taking into account various specific conditions. Subsequently, the design of the remediation technologies used at a specific location must also be adapted to this fact. Until now, mining waste facilities (heaps and sludge ponds) have been treated as environmental burdens. However, it should be borne in mind that abandoned extractive wast...

Fe OXYHYDROXIDES AS A REMEDIATION AGENT FOR CONTAMINATED MINE WATERS

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Ondrej Brachtýr)

One of the goals of our research was the evaluation of quantitative and qualitative properties of the Fe oxyhydroxides emerging from mine waters. Another one of the main goals of this research was the effectiveness comparison between natural and supported attenuation used as a remediation method for the removal of potentially toxic metals and metalloids from mining waters occurring on sites with sulfidic mineralization. Samples for this research were taken from abandoned mineral deposit of sulfide ores in the loca...

MINERALOGICAL, GEOCHEMICAL AND QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERISTIC OF SOLID PHASE FROM CATCHMENT AREA AFFECTED BY MINING ACTIVITY.

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Ondrej Brachtýr)

The main goal of our work was to define qualitative (geochemical and mineralogical) and quantitative composition of suspensions (solid phases), which originate in the outflows of mine waters into surface streams and significantly affect the quality of their waters and river sediments. The research was implemented on several abandoned mining areas in Slovakia, where Sb, Cu, Fe and Hg were exploited in the past. Mineral phases - mainly oxyhydroxides of Fe, Al and Mn - are transported by surface waters and are conseq...
