FLOOD SEASONALITY AND TREND CHANGES IN SELECTED SLOVAKIAN BASINS

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Romana Markova, Silvia Kohnova, Mgr. Roncak)

Floods are natural catastrophes which cause environmental and structural damages as also casualties. There is growing concern that flooding is becoming more frequent and severe not only in Europe but also in the whole world. This study investigates changes in trends and seasonality of annual peak-discharges for 51 mid-sized Slovakian gauging stations with the lengths of observations of 46 years. The area of selected catchments varies from 19 km2 to 295 km2. Seasonality of maximum annual peak-discharges is determin...

IDENTIFICATION OF CATCHMENTS WITH SIMILAR FLOOD CHARACTERISTICS IN THE ALPINE-CARPATHIAN BASINS

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-11-20, Romana Markova, Silvia Kohnova, Juraj Parajka, Jana Poorova, Julia Hall)

This study uses a pooling approach to identify catchments with similar flood characteristics in the Alpine-Carpathian region. The identification of similar regions is performed using the nonhierarchical k-means clustering algorithm and different sets of catchments characteristics (catchment area, forest cover, mean catchment elevation) and flood seasonality characteristic (concentration of flood around the mean date of flood occurrence). The optimal number of cluster is determined using the silhouette method. The ...

THE IMPACT OF LAND USE CHANGES ON FLOOD REGIME: A CASE STUDY OF THE MYJAVA CATCHMENT

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Peter Roncak, Kamila Hlavcova, Jan Szolgay, Silvia Kohnova, Evelin Lisovszki)

This study focuses on the analysis of the impact of land use changes on the flood regime in the Myjava River basin located in the Western Slovakia. The Myjava River basin has an area of 641.32 km2 and is typical for the formation of fast runoff processes, intensive soil erosion and muddy floods. The main factors responsible for the problems with flooding and soil erosion are location, geology, pedology, agricultural land use and cropping practices. A GIS-based spatially distributed WetSpa rainfall-runoff model was...
