INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS USE OF LAND RESOURCES ON THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF BOTTOM SEDIMENTS OF THE RIVER NETWORK OF THE KALININGRAD REGION

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Elena Demenchuk, Fatima Tseckoeva, Arina Klyashtornaya, Natalia Okomelko, Eugene Chepurin)

In 2015-2020 the content of heavy metals and metalloids in the river bottom sediments in Kaliningrad region was studied. Definition of arsenic, lead, zinc, copper, and vanadium, iron, manganese, titanium, aluminum was carried out in water samples and in the samples of bottom and floodplain sediments in the watercourses, flowing into the Curonian Lagoon, in the Baltic Sea and in Kaliningradsky (Vistula) Lagoon, as well as in the watercourses of the southern part of the Kaliningrad region. The composition and patter...

POSSIBILITY OF USING PERMANGANATE-OXIDIZED CARBON AS AN INDICATOR OF WELLBEING OF RIVER BOTTOM SEDIMENTS AND SOILS OF RIVER CATCHMENT AREAS

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Elena Demenchuk, Ivan Chiglintsev)

The article discusses the possibility of using permanganate oxidizable carbon (POxC, active carbon) as a comprehensive indicator for assessing the state of oil contaminated soils and bottom sediments. POxC has recently emerged as a standardized indicator of active, labile carbon within soil quality frameworks. According to the study, the application of this indicator of the ecological wellbeing of water body is possible since bottom sediments and soils are complex natural biogeochemical barrier zones. Bottom sedim...

CHANGE OF THE STATE OF SMALL RIVERS IN THE KALININGRAD REGION FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF DECADES

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Elena Demenchuk, И В Пивоварова, Oxana Krylova)

The influence of a number of factors on the condition of small rivers in the Kaliningrad region is considered. It has been shown that deforestation, floodplain cultivation and development, changes in microclimatic conditions, affecting even 20% of the catchment area of the small rivers, significantly specify their ecological state. Since bottom sediments are an indicator of the state of watercourses, their quality also depend not only on factors directly determining composition, but also on factors determining the...

SUSTAINABLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND RECREATIONAL FISHERY IN THE EXCLAVE KALININGRAD REGION: PROBLEMS AND CONFLICTS

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Elena Demenchuk, Vladimir Chasovskii, Larisa Amvroseva)

The article deals with a set of regional problems that require early adoption of political, environmental, institutional and scientific solutions to ensure sustainable development of the Kaliningrad region. The main problems are the imperfection of the legislative system, in which watercourses and lakes have different ownership forms to make it difficult to determine legal liability for the condition of water object. The imperfection of local management systems and the irrational separation of powers between autho...

IMPACT OF THE INDUSTRIAL GROWTH IN KALININGRAD REGION ON URBAN RIVER WATER QUALITY

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Elena Demenchuk)

Water quality of the urban rivers become a critical issue in some regions of Russia including Kaliningrad region. Since the processes of development have affected already existing urban industrial sites in a number of cities in the region and lead to formation of the new, certain risks have arisen for rivers flowing through the territory of new industrial clusters. In this regard, it was estimated the ecological condition of the rivers in the area of industrial load on the following indicators: 1) assessing of the...

THERMODYNAMIC RESEARCH OF THE TRACE ELEMENT SPECIATION IN SEDIMENTS

(STEF92 Technology, 2019-06-20, Elena Demenchuk)

The paper discusses the geochemical forms of some trace elements (As, Cu, Zn, Cr, Pb) which were identified in bottom sediments of rivers in different landscape conditions. Sediment types were divided into three groups in depending on the lithology and organic matter content: sandy and sandy-loam, typical for the northern part of the Semba Peninsula; silty-sand and loamy sediments with low (up to 7%) content organic matter (Warmia Upland); loams with high (up to 12%) content of organic matter (Polesskaya Lowland, ...

STUDY OF THE FORMS OF ARSENIC IN WATER AND BOTTOM SEDIMENTS

(STEF92 Technology, 2018-06-20, Elena Demenchuk)

This paper presents the geochemical forms of arsenic that are present in bottom sediments of rivers and surface waters under various oxidative conditions. In summer, in the rivers with the high anthropogenic load the redox potential of bottom sediments varies from 78 mV to 255 mV (at a temperature of 16-20?C), which corresponds to oxidative and mixed oxidative-reductive conditions. It is shown that under these conditions arsenic is present in the form of insoluble arsenous acid, partially ionized arsenic acid and ...

GEOECOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE SYSTEM OF THE HUMAN-MADE LAKES GOLUBYE OZYORA

(STEF92 Technology, 2017-06-20, Elena Demenchuk)

The article presents the results of geoecological studies of system of human-made lakes Golubye Ozyora, which are located near the Kaliningrad city. The studies were carried out from 2009 to 2016 in the framework of studying of the regional specific features of the formation of geochemical background of water bodies and the impact of the cross-media pollutions. It was in studies revealed the general characterization of lake-bottom sediments and water including the grain-size measurements; the determination of the ...
