Ostrava Lagoons belong among the most polluted areas in the Czech Republic. According to the available information, about 200 000 t of sludge from the industrial processing of crude oil during the whole 20th century were disposed there. The sludge contains high levels of organic pollutants (PAHs, PCBs, C10 - C40 hydrocarbons), including toxic metals of anthropogenic origin (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb).
