THE EFFECT OF THE SLATINA ALUMINUM FACTORY OPERATION ON THE WATER TABLE IN THE VICINITY OF THE OLT RIVER

(STEF92 Technology, 2023-10-01, Victorita Radulescu)

The largest aluminum factory in Eastern Europe is located near Slatina. Before Romania acceded to the EU in 2007, many environmental protection rules were omitted in this area. The paper analyzes the water table pollution along the Olt River for about 15 km. There are considered the tributary flows on the river, the concentration of discharged pollutants, and the pumping regime from the catchment front. It is built at about 500 m from the river, on the left bank, parallel to the river, and consists of 44 wells, of...

NEW PROPOSED SOLUTION FOR MINIMIZING THE EFFECTS CAUSED BY REPEATED FLOODS

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Victorita Radulescu)

Romania faces floods every 2-3 years, followed by human and animal losses, and large flooded agricultural areas. There are rivers such as Siret, Crisul Repede, Cri?ul Negru, Ialomita with non-rehabilitated areas that have systematically caused damages in the last decade. Based on the latest measurements, the real transport capacity of natural course in high flow conditions and flood risk was estimated. In recent years, after the massive floods recorded in 2005, 2008, 2012, and 2018, there have been uncontrolled de...

NUMERICAL MODELING OF INFILTRATION THROUGH DAMS AND LATERAL DIKES REALIZED OF LOCAL MATERIALS TO REHABILITATE THEM AND INCREASE THEIR LIFESPAN

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Victorita Radulescu)

In Romania before 1990, over 600 hydro-power plants were built with dams and lateral dikes made of local materials. In order to be completed as soon as possible and with material savings, the protection screens were improperly executed. In many cases there is no continuous protection screen along the dam and in its vicinity, but only from place to place, intermittently. The same problem is with the lateral dikes of the lakes. In these conditions, at the hydroelectric power plant commissioning, the infiltration imm...

SOIL QUALITY, A PERMANENT PROBLEM IN THE MANAGEMENT OF CRITICAL AREAS FACED WITH ACCIDENTAL OR CONTINUOUS POLLUTION

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Bogdan-Alexandru Radulescu, Victorita Radulescu)

Unfortunately, soil is a non-renewable resource that fulfills several vital functions such as food/biomass production, storage, filtration and transformation of mineral or biological substances, source of biodiversity and habitats, etc. Due to the development of industrial activities outside the localities, in many areas the soil is degraded. Among these degradation processes can be mentioned degradation of organic matter, contamination, soli salting, and erosion. This paper is dedicated to the presentation of the...

THE INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ON THE DOLPHIN POPULATION IN THE ROMANIAN COASTAL AREA

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Victorita Radulescu)

In recent decades, there have been some changes in the salinity, quality, and average temperature of the Black Sea water. Among other modifications, there was a significant decrease in the dolphin population on the Romanian coast. The decrease in the number of species Tursios trucantus ponticus, Delphinus delphis ponticus, and Phoococena phocoena relicata species found in this area required more detailed research to obtain information about their living conditions and migration. Located at the top of the ecologica...

THE INFLUENCE OF WATER LOSSES IN THE OPERATION OF THE WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM IN THE ROMANIAN BIG CITIES

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Victorita Radulescu)

In many cities from Romania, the water supply systems are very old, sometimes having over 60 years after their commissioning. Under these conditions, permanent large leakages are recorded. They are significant for the operator, influencing its economic performance and operating costs. The water supplier must understand the mechanism of water leaks and their influence on the performance of distribution network. The losses recorded by the system are unused for the purpose for which the supply was made, representing ...

THE SITUATION OF THE ROMANIAN COAST LAKES, AN OLD PROBLEM REQUIRING RAPID SOLUTIONS

(STEF92 Technology, 2021-12-20, Bogdan-Alexandru Radulescu, Victorita Radulescu)

Lakes on the Black Sea coast are the direct result of soil erosion and marine or hydrographic accumulations, consequence of the specific evolution of the nearby sea basin. They depend on the variations in groundwater levels, rainfall or other hydraulic surface sources. In recent decades, as a result of many small, local earthquakes, some deep currents have appeared. Lakes as origins, are of fluvial-marine estuary, lagoons or artificial. Many of them are tourist attractions, due to the specific microclimate establi...

COSTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION INTO THE PORT AREAS NEAR THE BLACK SEA

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Victorita Radulescu)

Environmental protection-related to economic activities have many important economic consequences. Normally, the threats to the environment come from economic development since all the problems concerning the protection of air, soil, and water always imply supplementary costs. All these costs must be well analyzed and balanced between the port administration, port companies, inhabitants, and authorities. In large ports areas from Romania, as Constanta and Mangalia near the Black Sea, during 1980-2010 were develope...

ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY SOLUTION TO COMBAT MASSIVE DEVELOPED VEGETATION IN NATURAL OR HYDROPOWER LAKES

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Bogdan-Alexandru Radulescu, Victorita Radulescu)

The Bistrita River was the first river harnessed for hydropower purposes in Romania, starting with 1960. Currently, on this river, 29 hydropower plants with different capacities are functioning, producing about 10% of the entire Romanian electric energy from hydro. Many of them were realized in series, in cascade. In the present paper, the area of Pangarati, Vaduri, Batca Doamnei, and Reconstructia hydropower lakes was analyzed. Of these, three are Nature Reservations, Nature 2000, RAMSAR sites. The lakes being re...

INFLUENCE OF THE SOLAR RADIATION OVER THE SEEDLINGS IN THE ROMANIAN FORESTS

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Bogdan Alexandru Radulescu, Victorita Radulescu)

In the last decades in Romanian forests, a massive phenomenon of uncontrolled cut trees was observed, leading to a new environmental problem. In these conditions, the solar radiation affects the seedlings of some tree species as the beech and oak, and generally the entire life from these forests. In the last 5-6 years, a supplementary massive invasion of the white mistletoe was observed, especially associated with the silver fir and beech. The main objective of this paper is to associate the effects of the solar r...

METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE GROUNDWATER POLLUTED BY THE SURFACE WATERS THROUGH INJECTION WELLS

(STEF92 Technology, 2020-09-20, Victorita Radulescu)

Optimum exploitation of the agricultural lands in the presence of polluted aquifers by surface sources requires close monitoring of the groundwater level in both periods of massive rains or, on the contrary, during drought seasons. The non-steady flow in the aquifer groundwater is described with the Boussinesq's partial differential equations. The boundary conditions consist of the groundwater level required at the margins of the analyzed area, in conformity of the pollutant emissaries, using the double steps meth...
